Charleston, Arizona

Home

Charleston, Arizona, was a mill town established in the late nineteenth century to support the silver and copper mining industry that developed once those ores began being mined in southern Arizona. Charleston supported the smaller village of Millville, directly across the San Pedro River. Portions of Millville still exist and are accessible from the Charleston Road running between Sierra Vista and Tombstone. The presence of the San Pedro River provided a ready made source of running water for the mills. Charleston existed for about twenty years until the mines dried up; while neighboring Tombstone survived, Charleston did not. Its remaining ruins are overgrown with mesquite trees and nearly impenetrable brush.
